NEW UK TV FORECAST OUT NOW

metadata

Attentional Metadata enhances the power of UK television audience data and opens up new possibilities for audience research.

We have been compiling metadata related to television content for many years.  The additional fields we provide, matched to standard industry television audience measurement (TAM) data, include Repeats (for major channels), Production Company/Co-Production Company, Country of Origin, and our unique Microgenre® system.

Using Microgenre® coding, programmes can be identified and filtered on three different levels, as follows:

Type:

The overall genre area of the programme,
i.e. Drama, News, Current Affairs, Sport, Light Entertainment etc.

Treatment:
A description of the presentation format or style of the programme,
i.e. Documentary, Makeover, Quiz etc.

Interest:
The main feature or subject of the programme,
i.e. Science, Romance, Western etc.

In the UK, Attentional metadata is typically integrated into BARB television audience data, allowing for new types of analysis. For example, using a combination of BARB data, Attentional Microgenre® data and some statistical knowledge, it is possible to assess the performance of different themes within Drama, or identify subjects with a particular appeal to a target demographic. Other applications have included creating market share reports, assessing the demand for new content types, and monitoring progress against regulatory targets.

Fiona joined Attentional in 2002 as head of the Metadata department. She oversees the logging of all UK terrestrial transmissions and is responsible for the addition of Attentional’s proprietary Microgenre® coding system, creating an extensive resource for statistical analysis. This has provided the basis for projects looking at areas such as independent production, UK-originated programming and measuring the levels of PSB programming.

Prior to joining Attentional, Fiona worked as Production Manager for Telemagination, one of the UK’s leading animation companies. During her 12 years with the company, she worked on The Animals of Farthing Wood and Noah’s Island, two multi-million pound projects for the European Broadcasting Union. She has also worked as Chief Sub-Editor on the television section of The Sunday Times. Fiona has a joint honours degree in English and Philosophy from Leeds University.
