The Bridge is the latest European drama to launch in the 9pm and 10pm slots on BBC4, which have recently housed The Killing, Borgen and Inspector Montalbano. Smash, the “Glee for grownups” US drama made its UK debut on Sky Atlantic at 10pm. The Madwoman in the Attic/DreamWorks/Universal production follows the creation of a new Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe, and stars Katharine McPhee (American Idol runner up in 2006), and Megan Hilty as two contenders for the title role. The US run began with 11.4m viewers on NBC, although figures have since declined, however it has remained one of the network’s top dramas in the key 18-49 demographic. The UK launch attracted 75,300 (0.38%), a strong performance in a slot with a benchmark Share of 0.27%, and one likely to be boosted by a high rate of time-shifted viewing.
